About Cubs

Parents & Cubs to be, welcome to

 Cubs at 1st Woodley

Now that you are over eight years old you can join the Cubs !

¨      Cubs @ 1st Woodley: We’ve got two Cub packs here at 1st Woodley, a pack is the name for a group of Wolf Cubs which is what Cub Scouts is named after.

On a Monday night it’s Panthers, this is run by Kaa, Akela and Shere Kahn

On a Wednesday night it’s Jaguars, this is run by Chil, Jakala and Baloo.

¨      Sections meet at 1st Woodley Scout Headquarters in The Close,
Southlake Crescent. The evenings run between 6:30pm and 8pm.

You may think the leaders have funny names, and you’re right!  We get our names from ‘The Jungle Book’ written by Rudyard Kipling, you may have seen the Disney cartoon. Each name relates to a character in the book for example Kaa is a snake and Akela is a wolf.

¨      The meeting: We always open a meeting with a grand howl and breaking the flag, don’t worry, you’ll soon learn what this is all about. When you join the pack you’ll be put in a team, we call these teams sixes. Each Six has a Cub who is responsible for the other Cubs in their team, he is your Sixer. There is also a second in command known as a Seconder. These cubs are the most responsible and best behaved cubs, but not necessarily the oldest! Your Sixer will look after you until you are invested. At the end of the evening we end with another grand howl and we lower the flag.
We do recommend that the Cubs bring a drink to each meeting as it can get very hot running around playing games.

Activities: The packs try and undertake a varied and interesting programme, with the main aim being to have some serious amounts of FUN!

Whether it’s taking part in district competitions like football, chess, cooking or quizzes or working towards their badges at the Scout hut, there is always something going on.

Our big activity which we hope all Cubs get involved in is our Pack holiday. Pack holiday is the main event in the Cub year and it is the thing we aim towards. Every May we spend a weekend away camping doing activities we would not normally undertake in the hut, like sleeping in a tent, abseiling, climbing, orienteering, swimming and much much more. It’s a brilliant weekend even if we do say so oursleves.

¨      Information: Please make sure you give all your details to the leaders. The usual stuff; address, phone numbers, school. Please also make sure you let us know about any allergies or medical conditions which the Cub may have. Things like asthma, nut allergies, allergies to plasters etc. As we would hate do a cooking activity and give a Cub a food which they weren’t supposed to eat! There is a copy of the from below, please download it and fill it in if you have not done so before.

District Events & Acorn Trophy

Loddon District Cubs organise a number of events each year, some of which are included under the Acorn Trophy as well as a Seconders Day and a Sixers Camp.

Acorn Trophy

Every year 1st Woodley Cubs take part in the district Acorn Trophy Competition. The Trophy is made up of a series of events; these events are usually: Football, Chess, Cooking, A Quiz, Swimming and The Arrow Chase.

Events usually start with Football in September and finish with the Arrow Chase at Easter time. Although these dates have been adjusted in 2006. In the 2003/04 Trophy 1st Woodley did very well, winning the Football and the Arrow Chase.

Ability is not an important factor it’s about doing your best, taking part and also representing your pack. Events always take place at weekends and there are further details below. At all of the events it is nice to see Parents stay and cheer on the teams such as football and swimming (although there is not always a lot of spectator space), at the Arrow Chase parent involvement is absolutely vital as the teams cannot take part without it.  If any parent wishes to volunteer to help supervise a team at the Quiz, Cooking or Chess then please feel free, your help is very much appreciated.

We do appreciate that many of the cubs take part in other weekend activities and may find it difficult to commit to taking part in some of these events.

If your child would like to participate in one of these events then please e-mail us at our e-mail address.

Proposed dates for District events in 2006/07 are:

CHESS:  Sunday 19th November

SECONDERS DAY:  Sunday 3rd December

QUIZ:  Sunday 21st January

SWIMMING:  Saturday 17th March

SIXERS W/E:  Fri/Sun 30th March/1st April

O2 DOME EVENT:   Saturday 24th November

Badge requirements

Badges:
Once you have been invested you will have some lovely new badges to sew on your uniform, and we do like to encourage all cubs to sew their own badges on. It doesn’t matter how well it’s done, the important thing is that they’ve tried ! Although we do like Parents to put the Cubs name in all their bits of uniform as neckers and jumpers get mixed up very easily. For where to put all your badges please click on the picture below

You can work towards activity badges which go on the right arm of the Cub uniform I have included what you need to do to complete the Collectors badges (it’s one of the most straight forward badges), perhaps you already have a collection which you can use to help get you this badge ? Here is what you need to do:

The Cub Scout must complete these four activities.

1.   Make a collection over a period of three months of a number of similar items (e.g. stamps, coins, postcards, matchbook covers, fossils).

2.   Display their collection in an exciting and interesting way.

3.      Talk about items in their collection that particularly interest them.

4.      Visit or look at a collection made by someone else and explain what they like or dislike about the presentation of the collection.

There are many more activity badges to get and you can find out about them in the Cub Powerpack book which you should buy before you are invested. You can also ask to borrow the requirement books from a leader or click on the link to the online requirements at the top of this page.
